Griffis Leads Men's Lacrosse to Win at Averett

DANVILLE, Va. - The Shenandoah University men's lacrosse team continued its streak of ODAC games with a 16-4 win at Averett University on Saturday afternoon.

The Hornets (5-10, 3-5 ODAC) took charge early in the game, grabbing a 6-2 lead at halftime before closing out the game with seven goals in the fourth quarter versus the Cougars (0-13, 0-7).

RECAP

Averett found the back of the net first after a Shenandoah turnover, but SU recovered and tied the game at one moments later with a goal from Cody Griffis. Later in the first, Griffis picked up an assist on a tally from Sam Poster, putting SU up 2-1. Then, after a faceoff win by Braxton Snead, Ryan Eager scored for the Hornets, putting them up by two at the end of the first.

Less than four minutes into the second, Griffis picked up his third point of the afternoon with another goal, this one assisted by Lucas Brooks. It took nearly eight minutes for the next goal to be scored as the Cougars found the back of the net to cut their deficit in half. In the final 90 seconds of the first half, Griffis and Luke Petrie scored to extend SU's lead out to 6-2 at halftime.

Similar to the first, the Cougars went on to score first in the third, but the Hornets shut them out for the rest of the quarter. At the offensive end of the field, SU got goals from Poster, Griffis, and Ryan Ho to carry a 9-3 lead into the final quarter.

The fourth quarter started with goals from Petrie and Parker Brown, before Brooks added one of his own. Griffis added two goals in the middle of the fourth, and Jordan Rogers scored his lone goal of the day, making it nine unanswered for the Horents. Each team scored in the final minute of the game, with Petrie adding a man-up goal for the Hornets.

Shenandoah went 20-24 on faceoffs on Saturday, with Brody McClure winning all 10 of his attempts.

Griffis had a seven-point day for SU, scoring six goals and adding an assist. Petrie, Poster, Eager, Brooks, and Liam Arnsmeyer also had multi-point contests.

Ryan Feldman played all 60 minutes for the Hornets in net and made 11 saves.

Kennedy Duda led the team defensively with four caused turnovers and four groundballs. Wyatt Gessner also added four groundballs.
