Softball Rallies for Sweep of Lynchburg

LYNCHBURG, Va. - The Shenandoah University softball team rallied for a sweep at the University of Lynchburg on Saturday in an ODAC doubleheader.

SU (22-6, 7-3 ODAC) won game one 11-7 and rallied in the seventh inning of game two for a 6-5 win over LYN (19-11, 8-2) to complete the sweep.

GAME ONE RECAP

Brenna Westwood singled home, Allison McQueeney in the first to open up the scoring. Paige Eagleton made it 2-0 with an RBI, prior to Keagan Cooper driving in Westwood and Eagleton on a two-RBI single.

Lynchburg cut the SU lead in half in the bottom of the first, but Westwood put the Hornets back up by three in the second with her second RBI of the day.

Over the next few innings, Lynchburg went on to score five unanswered runs to snag a 7-5 lead. However, Shenandoah went on to regain the lead, 8-7, in the sixth with help from a Lynchburg error and a Cadence Rieg RBI.

Shenandoah secured the win with back-to-back RBIs from Cooper and Kelly Hartman in the seventh and an RBI double from Sarah Medellin with one out in the inning.

GAME TWO RECAP

In the first three innings, neither team was able to score, but Shenandoah jumped out to a 3-0 in the fourth. The first run was driven in on a Paige Eagleton RBI and Keagan Cooper and Kelly Hartman drove in the next pair of runs.

However, once again, Lynchburg scored five consecutive runs to take a 5-3 lead in the fifth.

Shenandoah cut the LYN lead to one in the sixth on another RBI from Hartman. Then in the seventh, Allison McQueeney doubled, and Cadence Rieg scored her on an RBI double to tie the game. Two batters later, Makayla Cox drove in Rieg with the go-ahead RBI single.

Shenandoah retired the Lynchburg batters in order in the home half of the seventh to take the sweep.

Meghan Gaskins (8-0) was the winning pitcher of record in both games.

UP NEXT

Shenandoah heads to Sweet Briar College for another ODAC doubleheader tomorrow.
