Softball Sweeps Sweet Briar for Ninth Straight Win

SWEET BRIAR, Va. - The Shenandoah University softball team pushed its win streak to nine with a sweep at Sweet Briar College on Sunday in an ODAC doubleheader.

The Hornets (24-6, 9-3 ODAC) won game one 11-5 and used a four-run sixth inning in game two to sweep the Vixen (14-18, 3-9).

GAME ONE RECAP

Allison McQueeney started the game with a triple and came around to make it 1-0 on an RBI from Brenna Westwood. Makayla Cox added an RBI to make it 2-0, scoring Cadence Rieg. Cox eventually made it 3-0 in the first after scoring on a wild pitch.

A one-out, two-RBI single by the Vixen made it 3-2 in the bottom of the first. The Hornets went scoreless in the second, allowing the Vixen to tie the game at three. The tie didn't last long as Cox scored for the second time in the game on an RBI from Kelly Hartman which made it 4-3 in the third.

Payton Jensen led off the fourth with a single, before stealing second, and later scoring on an RBI single by Rieg, which made it 5-3. Paige Eagleton hit another triple for the Hornets later in the inning and added two-RBI, extending SU's lead out to four. Keagan Cooper singled home Eagleton in the very next at-bat, making it 8-3.

Sweet Briar added a run in the fourth and fifth, but with McQueeney scoring for SU in the fifth, the visitors led 9-5 at the end of five.

Then in the sixth, an error by the Vixen, plus an RBI by Hartman plated the final two runs of the game for the Hornets, putting them up 11-5.

Gracie Ravenkamp (10-2) pitched a complete game for the Hornets with three strikeouts.

All nine starters had a hit for SU, with Cox, Eagleton, and Jensen each having two.

GAME TWO RECAP

Makayla Cox recorded her third RBI of the day in the first inning of game two, scoring Allison McQueeney to put SU up 1-0. Sweet Briar went on to score in the third, tying the game at one.

After only having one total base runner in the second through fifth inning, SU started the sixth with a single by McQueeney and an RBI double by Cadence Rieg to reclaim the lead, 2-1. Rieg later scored in the inning on an RBI single from Paige Eagleton.

Still in the sixth, an RBI single from Kelly Hartman brought Lu Cirillo and Eagleton across the plate, making it 5-1.
