Lynchburg Sneaks Past Women's Lacrosse with Late Goal

LYNCHBURG, Va. - The Shenandoah University women's lacrosse team was beaten by the University of Lynchburg, 14-13, on Sunday afternoon in a road ODAC game.

LYN (10-4, 4-2 ODAC) overcame a five-goal deficit and scored the game-winning goal with 24 seconds left in the game to defeat SU (9-6, 4-2).

RECAP

Lynchburg opened the game strongly and took a 3-0 lead just over three minutes into the game. Shenandoah came right back and tied the game with goals from Natalie Opatovsky, Ayla Jantz, and Sofia Albi. A draw control win by Alex Ripkin led to Emily Ransom giving SU the lead with 7:17 left in the first. SU ended the first with a pair of goals from Addison Harmel to lead 6-3.

Less than a minute into the second quarter Jantz extended SU's lead out to four before scoring her third goal of the game to make it 8-3 with 11:15 remaining in the quarter. Lynchburg ended the quarter on a 4-0 run to trail by one at halftime, 8-7.

Lynchburg tied the game at eight in the third, but Shenandoah maintained the lead with another Jantz goal. Ransom scored another goal for SU in the third, but Lynchburg was able to respond multiple times, forcing a 10-10 tie heading to the fourth.

LYN struck twice in the first two minutes of the fourth to grab its first lead since the opening quarter, 12-10. Keira Choi came right back for SU to cut the visitor's deficit to one, prior to Sarah Karlinchak tying the game at 12.

Nearly halfway through the fourth, Opatovsky scored her second goal of the game, giving SU the lead back, 13-12. However, Lynchburg scored two goals in the final four minutes, including the game-winning goal with 24 seconds left to clinch the ODAC win.

Jantz led Shenandoah with four points, two groundballs, two caused turnovers, and five draw controls.

UP NEXT

Shenandoah is home next Saturday for senior day versus Sweet Briar at 1 p.m.
