Softball Sweeps Bridgewater Behind Jensen's Walk-Off Home Run

WINCHESTER, Va. - The Shenandoah University softball team swept Bridgewater College for the first time since 2017 with a 2-0 and 4-2 victory at home on Wednesday in an ODAC doubleheader.

The Hornets (26-6, 11-3 ODAC) took game on behind a Paige Eagelton home run and won game two on a walk-off home run by Payton Jensen, after the Eagles (23-11, 10-6) led 2-0 in the game.

GAME ONE RECAP

The Eagles got two runners in scoring position with no outs in the first, but Gracie Ravenkamp (11-2) struckout the next two batters and forced a groundout to get out of the inning. Another strikeout by Ravenkamp helped strand a runner in scoring position in the second.

The Hornets only had one baserunner through the first three innings. However, Cadence Rieg drew a leadoff walk in the fourth and later advanced to second. Then, with two outs in the inning, Paige Eagleton smashed a two-out, first pitch home run to right center giving the Hornets a 2-0 lead.

Ravenkamp got out of the fifth with no runs allowed after the Eagles got two more runners in scoring position. The first-year then pitched a perfect sixth and seventh inning to complete the win.

Overall, Bridgewater left seven runners on base, all of them stranded in scoring position. Ravenkamp held the opposition to 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position.

Ravenkamp's 11 wins ties her for the sixth most wins by an SU pitcher all-time in a single season.

GAME TWO RECAP

After the Hornets hit into an inning-ending double play in the first, the Eagles hit a two-out solo home run in the second to score first. Bridgewater then hit a leadoff home run in the third to lead 2-0.

Offense was quite for each team over the next few innings, until Bridgwater loaded the bases with two singles and a walk in the fifth. First-year Ava Matthews (2-0) was able to get out of the bases loaded jam, forcing two pop ups.

With an out in the home half of the fifth, Sarah Medellin doubled to get a runner in scoring position for SU. Aimee Ord pinch ran for Medellin and advanced to third on a wild pitch, before scoring on an RBI Payton Jensen.

In the sixth inning, Paige Eagleton tied the game 2-2 with her second home run of the day. Eagleton now has five home runs this season, tying her for seventh all-time in a single season for the Hornets.

In the seventh, Matthews allowed two two-out runners but forced another pop up to get out of the inning, with no runs crossing the plate.

With one out in the bottom of the seventh, Medellin reached base on a single through the left side, bringing Jensen up to the plate. On the eighth pitch of a full count battle, Jensen hit a two-run, walk-off home run to left field, handing SU the sweep.
