Softball Handles EMU in Midweek Sweep

HARRISONBURG, Va. - The Shenandoah University softball team played its final road doubleheader of the regular season and swept Eastern Mennonite University on Tuesday in ODAC play.

The Hornets (28-8, 13-5 ODAC) took game one 7-2 thanks to two home runs from Keagan Cooper. SU then won the nightcap 14-3 in five innings, scoring runs in each inning to complete the sweep of the Royals (6-26, 2-16).

GAME ONE RECAP

A lead-off home run by Keagan Cooper got the party started in the second inning for the Hornets. Ella Montgomery and Sarah Medellin singled, prior to each picking up a steal, leading to an EBI from Payton Jensen.

Still in the second, Cadence Rieg doubled down the left field line, plating Medellin. Rieg then quickly scored on a Brenna Westwood single, which made it 4-0. The Royals responded with a run in the bottom of the inning.

Just as she did in the second inning, Cooper led off the third with her second home run of the game, making it 5-1. EMU added a two-out home run in the home half of the third to cut its deficit back to three.

With Rieg and Westwood reaching base to start the fourth, Paige Eagleton hit a ball through the right side, which brought around Rieg. Westwood was able to score on a sacrifice fly from Cooper for Cooper's third RBI of the day.

The Hornets maintained their 7-2 lead for the rest of the game, retiring the last 13 EMU batters of the game.

Gracie Ravenkamp (12-3) went all seven innings in the circle, allowing four hits, while striking out three.

Makayla Cox, Westwood, Eagleton, Cooper, and Medellin all had two hits in the first game of the doubleheader.

GAME TWO RECAP

Game two started with a drawn walk by Cadence Rieg, before she was moved to third off a double from Paige Eagleton. The Eagleton double put two runners in scoring position for Makayla Cox to drive in to make it 2-0 in the first.

Rieg scored for the second time in as many innings, crossing the plate in the second on an RBI single from Eagleton. Brenna Westwood was the next Hornet to cross the plate as Cox picked up another RBI, prior to Keagan Cooper making it 5-0 with an RBI.

The Hornets added four runs in the third, extending their lead to 9-0. Rieg and Westwood drove in the first pair, before a two-out, two-RBI double by Cox added the final two.

Savannah Overton, Allison McQueeney, and Rieg each reached base in the fourth, loading them with two outs. Westwood was then hit on the first pitch of her at-bat, allowing Overton to score to make it 10-0.

Rieg (5-5) was in the circle for the Hornets and didn't allow a hit until the fourth inning. The Royals would go on to add two runs in the fourth, making it 10-2.

Three straight walks to Sydney Adler, Kelly Hartman, and Sarah Connell loaded the bases once again for the Hornets in the fifth. Payton Jensen had a sacrifice fly that added the 11th run of the game for SU, before McQueeney had a two-RBI hit for the next two runs. Finally, McQueeny stole second and came around to score on the same sequence thanks to an EMU error.

The Royals were only able to score once in the fifth, giving SU the five-inning, run-rule victory.

Cox wrapped up the game with a team-high four RBI.

The Hornets had nine stolen bases combined between the two games, giving them 103 on the season.
