Women's Lacrosse Stings Yellow Jackets, 9-6

WINCHESTER, Va. - The Shenandoah University women's lacrosse team defeated Randolph-Macon College for the seventh time in six seasons with a 9-6 ODAC win at home on Friday.

For the second time this week, Ayla Jantz led the Hornets (9-4, 5-0 ODAC) with at least four goals, including the eventual game-winner today against the Yellow Jackets (8-4, 2-2).

RECAP

The first quarter was quite on the offensive side of the ball for both teams, with Randolph-Macon scoring the only goal of the frame. SU's defense had three caused turnovers in the first, with Lindsay McCrory leading the way with two in the quarter

It didn't take long for the Hornets to even the game in the second, as Alyssa Webster took advantage of a Yellow Jackets penalty to score the team's first goal. Less than three minutes later, Natalie Opatovsky gave the Hornets the lead on a free position shot.

Ayla Jantz scored her first two goals of the afternoon in the second quarter, which put the Hornets up 4-1. The Yellow Jackets were able to get two late goals in the quarter, but Addison Harmel gave SU an insurance goal heading into the second half with the Hornets up 5-3.

Two early turnovers by SU in the second half helped RMC cut its deficit down to one, 5-4. Talia Maria quickly caused a turnover, which transitioned the Hornets down the field, leading to Emily Ransom putting SU back up by two.

In the final seven minutes of the third quarter, each team scored to keep SU's lead at two heading into the fourth. Jantz was the one to find the back of the net for the Hornets during that span, with the team's second man-up goal of the day.

The Yellow Jackets scored less than a minute into the final quarter to come within one. However, the Hornets' defense locked down the visitors for the rest of the game and added two insurance goals at the other end of the field with tallies from Jantz and Ransom.

Shenandoah's goalies combined for nine saves. Maddie Gaboury made the start and had four, while Madison Perry played the second half and ended with five.

The Hornets head to Washington and Lee University next Wednesday for the rematch of the 2025 ODAC Championship.
