Women's Lacrosse Drops First ODAC Game of the Season to No. 6 Generals

LEXINGTON, Va. - In a rematch of last season's ODAC Championship, the Shenandoah University women's lacrosse team fell to the No. 6 Washington and Lee University 10-6 on the road in an ODAC game on Wednesday.

The Hornets (9-5, 4-1 ODAC) picked up hat tricks from Natalie Opatovsky and Emily Ransom, but the Generals (12-2, 7-0) were able to hold the lead for nearly the entire game, outside of a tie early in the contest.

RECAP

Both teams turned over the ball on their first possessions, with the Hornets getting a caused turnover from Nicole Graham. On the Generals' second possession, they scored the opening goal of the game. Alex Ripkin won the ensuing draw control, leading to a penalty on the hosts and a goal from Emily Ransom, tying the game.

Washington and Lee scored two goals to go up 3-1 prior to Natalie Opatovsky earning her first goal of the day. The Generals added a goal late in the first, but Ransom struck early in the second to keep SU's deficit at one, 4-3.

Two goals by the Generals in less than a minute span put them up by three, their largest of the first half. Ransom's third goal of the half, along with caused turnovers by Graham and Ellie Schwartz, helped cut the Hornets' deficit back to two at halftime, 6-4.

Defense continued to be strong for both teams in the third quarter, as it took over six minutes for the first goal to be scored in the quarter, with the Generals striking for a 7-4 lead. Minutes later, Ayla Jantz found Opatovsky for the fifth SU goal.

The Generals proceeded to go on a 3-0 run for over the next 13 minutes of game time. Opatovsky ended the W&L run with her third goal of the night off an assist from Addison Harmel, making it 10-7, which would stand to be the score for the remainder of the game.

The Hornets won seven draw controls, led by four from Jantz. Harmel and Graham tied for the team-high in caused turnovers with three each. Graham also led the Hornets in groundballs with four.
