Softball Sweeps UMW for Most Wins Since 2013

WINCHESTER, Va. - The Shenandoah University softball team swept the University of Mary Washington on Tuesday at home to secure its most wins since 2013. SU won 9-1 in five innings in game one and then earned a 4-2 win in game two.

Cadence Rieg led the Hornets (20-6) with a four-hit, three-RBI day. Gracie Ravenkamp (9-2, 1 SV) pitched a complete game against the Eagles (16-14) in game one, before coming back in game two to get the save.

GAME ONE RECAP

After the Eagles went down in order in the top of the first, Allison McQueeney doubled to center on the first pitch the Hornets saw. Cadence Rieg, the very next batter, hit a full-count double to center to drive in McQueeney for the opening run.

With Sarah Medellin and Payton Jensen on base in the second and two outs, Brenna Westwood hit a two-RBI single to left field, making it 3-0 for the Hornets. Mary Washington responded with a run in the third.

Medellin scored for the second time in the game, crossing the plate on a wild pitch in the bottom of the fourth to make it 4-1 for the Hornets.

In the fifth, Makayla Cox and Keagan Cooper reached base to lead off the frame for SU. Then, with Lu Cirillo and Aimee Ord pinch running for the Hornets, Paige Eagleton singled home Cirillo. Ord then quickly made it 6-1 on a wild pitch.

Still in the fifth with no outs, Kelly Hartman hit an RBI single to center field to score Eagleton, before advancing to second on an error. Jensen added a sacrifice fly, putting SU up 8-1. Later in the inning, Rieg was able to end the game on a single through the right side, which scored McQueeney.

Gracie Ravenkamp allowed three hits, zero earned runs, a walk, and struckout two in the complete game win. The first year now has the most wins by an SU pitcher since 2019.

GAME TWO RECAP

Mary Washington grabbed an early 1-0 lead, but it didn't take long for Shenandoah to answer with a two-run first inning to take the lead. Cadence Rieg doubled home Allison McQueeney, as she did in the first inning of game one. Then Rieg came around to score on an RBI double from Makayla Cox.

The next few innings were quiet until Paige Eagleton hit a solo home run to right field in the fourth, pushing SU's lead to two, 3-1. The Eagles cut their deficit to one in the fifth with an RBI infield single.

Eagleton helped add an insurance run in the six inning with Lu Cirillo scoring her second run of the day.
The Hornets now have 150 RBI as a team this season, surpassing last year's total of 149.

Meghan Gaskins (6-0) pitched five innings, striking out four. Gracie Ravenkamp pitched the final two innings to get her first career save.
