Coach Anderson Wins 700th Game as a Hornet

WINCHESTER, Va. - With the No. 5 Shenandoah University baseball program's 23-9 run-rule victory over No. 25 University of Mary Washington, head coach Kevin Anderson now has 700 wins at Shenandoah.

The Hornets (28-4) used a 14-run fifth inning to get past the Eagles (19-8) and give their skipper his 700th win as a Hornet. Overall, in 27 years in the NCAA, Coach Anderson has 847 career wins with a 700-287-2 record at SU.

RECAP

Jaime Padilla and Kyle Garrett reached base to start the bottom of the first, and both scored on a two-RBI triple by Carl Keenan. JP Williams then picked up an RBI on a groundout, scoring Keenan for a 3-0 lead. Two batters later, the Hornets were given a 4-0 lead thanks to an RBI single by Tyler Smith, which plated Dillon Mauzy.

Despite the big first inning, the Hornets allowed a three-run top of the second by the Eagles. The Eagles then held the Hornets scoreless in the home half of the inning to keep SU's current lead at 4-3.

Neither team scored in the third, and Avery Schaeffer (2-0)  pitched a scoreless top of the fourth, keeping SU up by one. In the bottom of the frame, Keenan added his second two-RBI extra-base hit with a double, which scored Christian Carver and Padilla. Keenan came around to score on a sacrifice fly by Williams, putting SU up 7-3.

Schaeffer continued to pitch into the fifth, after entering in the second, and got the first two batters out. However, after the next two reached, Joey Mitchell went to the mound and got the Hornets out of a bases-loaded situation.

The Hornets took off in the bottom of the fifth, scoring 14 runs on six hits and an error. In the big inning, SU had 20 players come to the plate. The inning started with an out, but the bases were then quickly loaded. Padilla and Garrett kept the team going station-to-station with RBI, prior to Keenan adding a two-RBI single for an 11-3 advantage.

Mauzy contributed with an RBI on a sacrifice fly for the next run, and Adham Sahebzadah picked up a two-RBI single to make it 14-3. Then, with bases loaded, Samuel Vandrey delivered a bases-clearing double for three more runs. An error with two outs kept the inning going, allowing SU to add four more runs.

The very next inning saw Jared Neal score on a balk, and Nolan Kruse pick up his first career hit for an RBI. The Hornets led 23-3 entering the seventh, prior to the Eagles adding six runs in the final half inning.

Keenan finished the day with six RBI and three hits, which both were both team-highs. Williams, Vandrey, and Sahebzadah joined Keenan with multi-RBI games
