No. 5 Baseball Soars Past No. 9 Eagles in Battle of ODAC Heavyweights

BRIDGEWATER, Va. - The No. 5 Shenandoah University baseball program won a battle of top-10 ODAC teams with an 11-4 ODAC win at No. 9 Bridgewater College on Tuesday.

The Hornets (27-4, 11-4 ODAC) scored two or more runs in four separate innings on Tuesday, led by a four-RBI game by Christian Carver. Braden Landis (3-0) got the win on the mound over the Eagles (23-6, 7-5 ODAC).

RECAP

After each team left a runner on base in the first, Christian Carver hit a two-out, two-RBI double in the second to score Tyler Smith and Kemper Omps to make it 2-0 for the Hornets. Jaime Padilla continued the two-out magic with an RBI single, scoring Carver.

Then, two batters later, Carl Keenan continued his on-base streak with an RBI single, plating Padilla, and putting SU up by four. Bridgewater added one run in the bottom of the second, before making it a two-run game in the third.

In the top of the fourth, Kyle Garrett added the team's fifth two-out run of the game with an RBI single up the middle, which brought Padilla home. However, the Eagles once again made it a two-run game in the bottom of the frame.

Keenan and Dillon Mauzy both drew walks in the fifth, setting up a three-run home run from Adham Sahebzadah with two outs in the inning, putting SU up 8-3. Mauzy then added a two-out RBI single in the sixth, extending SU's lead to six.

Jacob Martin and Omps reached base early in the seventh, leading to Carver's second two-RBI hit of the day to push SU's lead up to eight. Tyler Smith crushed his league-leading 12th home run of the season in the eighth and Omps added an RBI to push the Hornets on the verge of a run-rule victory. However, the Eagles added a run in the bottom of the eighth to get the game to the ninth inning.

Liam Stewart entered the game on the mound for SU with two outs in the eighth and retired all four batters he faced to lock down the win for SU. Braden Landis got the win with just under three innings of work out of the bullpen.

Carver, Padilla, Keenan, Smith, and Omps each had multi-hit days for the Hornets.

UP NEXT

The Hornets are home on Wednesday for another top-25 matchup as they face No. 25 Mary Washington in non-conference play. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
