Baseball Headed to Regional Championship

WINCHESTER, Va.- The Shenandoah University baseball program will have the chance to play for a regional championship after defeating Transylvania University 15-4 in the winner's bracket of the Winchester Regional on Saturday afternoon.

After falling behind 2-0 in the first, the Hornets (37-10) came back with five straight runs to claim the lead over the Pioneers (30-13). Tyler Smith hit his 13th home run of the season and added a game-high four RBI to lead the Hornets into the championship game.

RECAP

The Pioneers hit a two-run home run in the top of the first to jump out to an early lead and then sat the Hornets down in order in the home half. 

Starter Joey Mitchell allowed a leadoff single in the second but got help from a double play to keep the SU deficit at two. An error by the Pioneers and an SU single put JP Williams and Adham Sahebzadah on base in the bottom of the second with no outs. Transylvania quickly forced two outs, but a Christian Carver RBI and another Pioneer error tied the game, 2-2.

Mitchell had a one-two-three third inning, keeping the game knotted at two. Kyle Garrett reached on an infield single to start the bottom of the third and moved over to third base thanks to a sacrifice bunt and a stolen base. Williams singled home Garrett to give SU the lead, 3-2. The lead then increased as Tyler Smith launched a two-run shot to center field with two outs. The home run was Smith's first since April 8, as he leads the Hornets with 13.

In the fifth, Smith was hit by a pitch for the 26th time this season, breaking the single-season record for times reached on a HBP for an SU player. This put two on board for Carver, who doubled home two runs before moving to third on an error. Kemper Omps then hit an RBI single to score Carver, and another Pioneer error let Omps score. The Hornets led 9-3 through five.

Transylvania responded with a one-spot in the top of the sixth. However, Sahebzadah and Smith hit consecutive RBI singles to push SU to 11 runs, prior to Omps adding another RBI for a 12-4 advantage. Following a stolen base by Omps, Carl Keenan hit a two-out, two-RBI single to score Omps and Smith and make it 14-4.

SU's final run of the afternoon came across in the seventh on an RBI single from Smith.

Braden Landis (4-0) went 3.1 innings in relief for the Hornets, giving him the win. The reliever gave up two hits, a run, two walks, and punched out three. Nick Bell pitched the final two innings for Shenandoah, retiring all six batters he faced, while having four strikeouts.

Carver (3), Keenan (2), and Omps (2) joined Smith with multi-RBI games. All nine batters for SU had a hit, led by three from Smith and Keenan.

The Pioneers finished the game with six errors on the defensive side of the ball, while the Hornets had a clean game defensively.

UP NEXT

Shenandoah plays Messiah University at 11 a.m. in game six of the regional. If Messiah wins, the teams will play the "if necessary" game following the 11 a.m. contest. The winner of the regional championship moves on to Super Regionals next weekend.
