Baseball Stings Yellow Jackets in First Game of ODAC Finals Round

TYSONS, Va. -  The Shenandoah University baseball program won its first game of the 2026 ODAC Final Series with a 5-3 decision over the three-seed Randolph-Macon College on Thursday night at Capital One Park.

The Yellow Jackets (26-13) put up three runs in the top of the first, but the Hornets (33-9) shut them down for the remainder of the game. SU tied the game with a three-run fifth, and Tyler Smith drove in the go-ahead run in the sixth. Jacob Gilbert (5-2) picked up the win in relief, and Liam Stewart earned his seventh save, with the duo combining for four innings of work.

RECAP

The Yellow Jackets put the first three batters of the game on base, leading to a one-out, two-RBI single. Following a walk, a sacrifice fly made it 3-0 for the Yellow Jackets in the first. The Hornets only had one baserunner through the first four innings.

Trailing by three, the Hornets put Jackson Sherman on the mound. Sherman went three innings, allowing one hit, two walks, and striking out two to keep the deficit at three.

The script changed in the bottom of the fifth with JP Williams and Adham Sahebzadah hitting back-to-back singles to start the frame. The duo advanced a base on a wild pitch and Kemper Omps drove them in with a two-RBI single.

Omps then stole second and advanced on an error, allowing Christian Carver to drive him in with an RBI, tying the game at three. After tying the game, Jacob Gilbert came out of the bullpen to pitch for the Hornets.

Gilbert struck out two batters and worked around a one-out walk to keep the game tied heading to the home half of the sixth. With bases loaded and the Hornets at the plate, Tyler Smith hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield, scoring Dillon Mauzy and putting SU up by one.

The Yellow Jackets threatened in the eighth, loading the bases, but Liam Stewart got the Hornets out of the jam with an inning-ending strikeout. This allowed Smith to add an insurance run with an RBI single, plating Williams.

Stewart came back out in the top of the ninth and shut the door, striking out the side in order.
