WINCHESTER, Va. – Coach Rob Harris and the SU men's basketball team made it two consecutive season opening championships in a row Saturday afternoon with a 67-52 victory over Mary Washington in the Impressions Plus Apple Tip-Off Classic championship game.
Shenandoah (2-0) won the 2001 championship with a triple overtime victory over Salisbury, but only needed the regulation 40 minutes to dispatch Mary Washington (1-1) this season. The Hornets led virtually the entire way and led by as much as 22 in the second half of play. The Eagles did cut the seven point (32-25) halftime deficit to two with 16:29 to play, but a 14-2 SU run over the seven minutes sealed the visitors fate.
Senior Tyson Thompson (Keysville, Va./Randolph Henry) led his squad to the championship with his second solid outing in as many nights. Thompson had a game high 20 points on a 7 of 15 shooting; he made his first three shots of the game and his three-pointer at the 18:05 mark of the first gave SU the lead for good. Playing shooting guard tonight after starting at the point on Friday, Thompson earned MVP honors by combining the 20 points with four rebounds and two assists.
The senior was joined on the All-Tournament by junior Halston Camp (Harrisonburg, Va./Harrisonburg) and sophomore Tom Crawford (Alexandria, Va./Montgomery-Rockville). Camp had his first double-double of the young season with 15 points and 10 boards while Crawford added eight points to go along with his second straight game with nine assists.
Dan Dupras led MWC with nine points and gained a spot on the All-Tournament team.
Cabrini captured third place at the tournament with an 82-48 blowout victory over Christendom (3-6). Tim Maddox earned All-Tournament honors for the Cavaliers (1-1).
