Chowan Beats SU Men

MURFREESBORO, N.C. E Chowan College extended the menís basketball teamís losing streak to three Sunday afternoon with a 59-41 Dixie Conference victory.

Continued shooting woes plagued the Hornets (8-6, 1-4) in the first half; SU missed nine of its first 10 shots from the field and was just 2 for 5 from the foul line by the time the first radio timeout at 13:14.

The problems from the floor persisted for the rest of the period and allowed Chowan (5-11, 2-3) open up a 15 point lead at 30-15 by the break. The Hornets shot just 6 for 29 (20.7 percent) with junior Todd Holt (Powhatan, Va./Louisburg JC) leading the way with five.

SU began its comeback with a 9-5 run to start the second that cut the deficit to 35-24 with 14:24 left. Included in this run was five points from senior Tyson Thompson (Keysville, Va./Randolph-Henry) but as with the womenís game, this run would prove to be the high water mark for the visitors.

Chowan erased all thoughts of a Shenandoah comeback by extending the advantage back to 15 points and then 20 following an SU technical foul with 11:00 minutes remaining.

Only four points in the final 10 seconds by freshman James Brodie (Stafford, Va./North Stafford) prevented Chowan from holding the Hornets to a program low in points scored. The 41 points scored is an SU Division III low and is just one point better than Shenandoah scored against Georgetown University in 1988.

Thompson led with 11 points while Halston Camp (Harrisonburg, Va./Harrisonburg) had eight points, 10 rebounds and a career high five blocks.

Dejuan Green had 29 for the Braves.
