WINCHESTER, Va. - The Shenandoah University men's basketball team got itself back on the winning track Sunday afternoon with a 64-63 victory over Mary Washington College in the consolation game of the 2nd Annual imPRESSions PLUS Tournament.
Shenandoah (1-1) got the victory when junior Chris Rhone (Washington, D.C./Northwestern) nailed a 10-foot jumper with 15 seconds remaining.
Rhone's bucket prevented SU from finishing fourth at its season opening tournament for the first time since 1997. For Mary Washington (1-2) the loss represented the second in as many days that occurred in the waning moments of the contest. MWC lost to Marietta (O.) in Saturday's opening round after the Pioneers heaved in a last second prayer from 22 feet out to send the game into overtime.
SU led the contest by as much as 15 points in the first half of play only to see the Eagles go on an 11-3 run to start the second half to knot the game at 41-41 with 12:39 left. After the hosts answered with a 6-0 run of their own to take a six-point advantage with 11:02 remaining, Mary Washington outscored the Hornets 18-2 over the next 5:02 to take a commanding 59-51 lead.
Shenandoah answered this run with an 8-0 spurt and for the rest of the way neither team could jump ahead by more than four points.
Mary Washington never relinquished the lead until Rhone's basket; the Eagles had one chance to escape with the win but Jon Hurd's runner in the lane went off the front rim as time expired.
Rhone led all scorers with 19, while junior
Chris Jenkins (Bristow, Va./Brentsville) added 18 and Lenny Myers (Rockville, Md./Montgomery-Rockville) 10 for SU. Hurd had 16 and Ian Sumers 10 for MWC.
