FROSTBURG, Md. – The SU men's basketball team won its third straight game Tuesday night with an 80-68 victory over Frostburg State University.
Shenandoah (3-1) now has won 10 of the last 13 games in the longtime series; Frostburg (2-3) leads 42-33 all-time.
The Hornets broke open a close game with a 16-4 run midway through the second half to turn a 53-49 lead into a 69-53 advantage with 5:33 minutes remaining. FSU staged a brief comeback by cutting the deficit to 11 on two different occasions around the one minute mark, but a defensive stop and then two free throws by
Chris Jenkins (Bristow, Va./Nokesville) with 43 seconds effectively ended the contest.
Junior Chris Rhone (Washington, D.C./Northwestern), who was named USA South Conference Player of the Week for the second straight week Monday afternoon, led Shenandoah in scoring for the fourth straight game with 25 points. Halston Camp (Harrisonburg, Va./Harrisonburg) joined Rhone in double figures with 14 and he in rebounds with nine.
Before the Hornets went on that run in the second, it needed strong shooting performance to hold off a pesky Bobcats squad. The Hornets made their first three shots of the game and six of nine to take a 15-14 lead by the first media timeout. Rhone provided an omen of things to come as he had eight of these points on two 'treys' and two other field goals in the first six minutes of play.
The Bobcats had no answer for Rhone as he totaled 18 points for the half, but the Hornets needed to shoot a season best 16 for 28 (57.1 percent) to be able to take a 42-39 lead into the halftime lockerroom. FSU shot 15 of 31 from the field and 7 for 7 at the charity stripe to keep itself within striking distance the whole half.
David Quay led the hosts with 18 points and also grabbed a game high 10 rebounds. Shenandoah outrebounded FSU 42-30.
