WINCHESTER, Va. - Shenandoah University used a career high five three-pointers from junior Chad Brashears (Hagerstown, Md./St. Maria Goretti) Tuesday evening against Ferrum College to help key a 16 point halftime advantage and cruise to a 91-71 Dixie Conference victory.
Shenandoah (11-9, 4-6) gained a split of the season series by shooting a blistering 19 of 34 (55.9 percent) in the first 20 minutes and held a 48-32 lead at the break.Â
After Ferrum (7-14, 4-6) threatened to make a game of it by going on a 15-5 run from the 17:39 to 12:18 marks, SU put the game away by answering with a 20-6 run of its own.Â
The Hornets led 77-57 and 8:13 remained on the clock at the end of this display; the contest was now effectively over.
This run prevented Ferrum from staging a repeat of its comeback victory on January 21 when they erased a 14 point second half deficit and escaped with a 61-59 triumph.Â
Senior Tyson Thompson (Keysville, Va./Randolph Henry) led all scorers with 20 points, but it was Brashears' 5 for 7 shooting performance from behind the arc in the first half that had the Shingleton Gymnasium crowd buzzing. Brashears matched his career high with the outburst; he previously had five three pointers against two other occasions, most recently against Averett University on January 12, 2002.Â
Kevin Aigbe had 19 points and a co-team high seven boards for Ferrum with RaRa Cunningham adding 12 points and Sidney Jackson 11.Â
Michael Atkins (Winchester, Va./Sherando) had a double-double for SU with 13 points and a game high 11 rebounds.
