WINCHESTER, Va. - Monday night's USA South Conference matchup between Shenandoah and visiting Chowan featured the two top scorers in the league: Shenandoah's Chris Rhone and Chowan's Trayvon Lathan. The two came out firing and Lathan got the best of it as the Braves defeated host SU 95-89.
Rhone (Washington, D.C./Northwestern) had 32 points for the Hornets (5-7, 1-2), but Lathan answered with a game high 37 points to give CC (6-7, 1-2) the victory.
The victory is Chowan's first in Winchester since joining the USA South (nee Dixie) for the 2000-01 season. They now lead the all-time series between the two schools 5-4.
The Braves earned the victory by shooting a lights out 19 for 32 (59.4 percent) in the second half and blocking seven Shenandoah shots. SU was 15 of 35 (42.9 percent) and turned the ball over just three times after the break, but after Chowan took its lead to 11 points with a 9-2 run from the 15:11 to 13:20 marks, the Hornets could get no closer than three points the rest of the way.
Rhone got his club within one possession when he made it 88-85 with 1:21 remaining, but Lathan scored five of the game's next six points to put the game out of reach. The freshman 22 of his 37 after the half and scored 11 of the 13 points that CC scored in the final five minutes of the game. The only two points he did not score came on Joseph Cowan's two free throws with three ticks left. At that point, the game was already decided.
In addition to Rhone's 32, Kenneth Purnell (Baltimore, Md./Lake Clifton) had a career high 27 for the hosts. Cowan added 21, Marcus Artis 14 and Wayne Hambrick 12 for the Braves.
Lathan also had a game high 11 rebounds for CC, who outrebounded Shenandoah 39-32.
