WINCHESTER, Va. - Junior pre-season All-American
Onyie Onunakunailed a five-footer as time expired Tuesday night to give visiting Shenandoah a 91-89 men's basketball victory over host Eastern Mennonite.
Onunaku's final bucket capped a see-saw second half in which the two teams traded the lead on six occasions and were on tied on seven others. The Hornets (2-1) led by as much eight in the final 20 minutes of play only to see EMU (1-1) come back each time.
The Royals held a four-point, 87-83, lead with 1:57 remaining before sophomore guard
Antwon Townsend hit his game-high fifth three-pointer to bring SU within one.
Shenandoah then took the lead by forcing a pair of missed shots by the hosts and then getting a
Jared Hale 'three' from the corner with 36 seconds remaining.
EMU tied it on Jason Sager layup with nine ticks showing and SU coach Rob Harris called time-out to set up the final play.
Freshman guard
Lenzie Adams raced the length of the court before kicking it into Onunaku, who spun, took a pair of dribbles and then floated his jumper from the middle of the lane as time expired.
Shenandoah had four players in double figures, led by junior
Moutkar Fawehinmi career-high 23. Onunaku had 19, Townsend 15 on the five 'threes' and junior
Quan Griffin 10.
Sager and Korey Whiting each had 22 for the Royals.
