WINCHESTER, Va. - Shenandoah University used a sizzling second-half shooting performance Tuesday night to down longtime rival Frostburg State 81-77 in non-conference men's basketball action.
Shenandoah (3-1) shot 17 for 30 (56.7 percent) following the break to dispatch the Bobcats (3-2).
FSU took a 33-32 lead into the halftime lockerroom as SU shot just 14 for 36 (38.9 percent) in the first 20 minutes of play. Frostburg used the Hornets cold shooting start to hold the lead virtually the entire first-half; they led by as many as six points before a 6-0 Shenandoah run tied the game at 26-26 with 3:41 to play.
FSU answered with a 4-0 run of its own before a pair ofÂ
Onyie Onunakufree-throws made it 33-32 in favor of the visitors at the break.
And then the Hornets got hot.
SophomoreÂ
Antwon Townsend keyed a 49-point second half team performance with 22 points on six three-pointers, two free throws and one two-point field goal. Townsend's career-high outing led a group of four SU players in double figures -Â
Moutkar Fawehinmi had 18, Onunaku 16 with 18 rebounds andÂ
Jeremiah Lawrence 10 points and 15 boards.
A 9-4 run to start the second gave the hosts a 41-37 advantage; they would extend this bulge to 50-40 by the 15:05 mark.
After the two teams traded scores for the next three minutes, Shenandoah pushed it to 61-50 with 10:02 left.
Frostburg then went on a 12-0 run over the next 3:32 to take its only lead, 62-61, at 6:26. Townsend hit a three-pointer on the next trip down the floor, and the Hornets led the rest of the way.
