FREDERICKSBURG, Va. E Shenandoah University used a school-record shooting performance Saturday afternoon to complete its first semester of menís basketball action with a 77-71 non-league victory over host Mary Washington.
Shenandoah (6-2) was a school best-ever 30 for 49 (61.2 percent) from the field, including 9 of 12 (67.0 percent) from behind the arc as it downed the Eagles (5-2) for the second consecutive year.
But it wasnít easy.
Up by 11, 70-59, following aÂ
Quan Griffin three-pointer at the 5:08 mark, SU saw its hosts score the next eight points of the game as the Hornets were unable to convert shots on three consecutive possessions. JuniorÂ
Onyie Onunaku , playing with four fouls, finally ended this scoreless streak with a dunk to make it 72-67 with 1:11 remaining.
Mary Washington then began to foul in attempt to cut the deficit even further, but the Hornets made three of their final six free throws (and the front end of two one-and-ones) to maintain the lead. Still, it took aÂ
Moutkar Fawehinmi dunk and an Onuanku block in the waning moments to seal the Eagles fate.
Fawehinmi and Griffin led the victors with 15 points each whileÂ
Jeremiah Lawrence added 14 andÂ
Antwon Townsend 11. Griffin was a perfect 5 for 5 from behind the arc for his 15 points while Townsend, in his first non-start of the year, was 3 for 3 from the field (all three-pointers) and 2 for 2 from the line for his 11.
Shenandoah was outrebounded for just the second time all year, but got seven boards from Lawrence and six from Fawehimni to lead that category.
Jon Pierce paced Mary Washington with 15 points. He was one of four Eagles in double figures.
