WINCHESTER, Va. - For the second straight contest, Shenandoah University committed a foul with three seconds to play in regulation and saw its opponent steal the game by converting both free throws.
Saturday's opponent was Greensboro College, and the hero was senior Rodney Blackstock as he gave the Pride a 67-66 USA South Conference win with the pair of clutch foul shots.
Up 66-65 with afterÂ
Kenny Purnell nailed a jumper with 1:42 left, Shenandoah (13-11, 5-6 USA South) preserved the lead when sophomoreÂ
Onyie Onunaku blocked layups at the 41 and 8 second marks. Unfortunately, seniorÂ
Chris Rhone was called for an offensive charge after the first of Onunaku's blocks, giving GC (10-13, 6-5 USA South) the ball back with 12 seconds left.
After Blackstock missed a jumper with eight ticks left, a pair of time-outs ensued as the two teams tried to set up their final offense and defense.
Blackstock drove the baseline and drew the foul as he attempted a short jumper, and then calmly drained his opening free throw.
SU attempted to call time out prior to Blackstock's next attempt, but one official allowed the game to continue. As Blackstock's shot left his hand, a second official waved it off and granted the timeout.Â
Blackstock nailed his second chance at the second free throw, giving his club the winning margin. Rhone had a running attempt for a game winning shot as time expired, but his three-pointer from 22 feet went off the front of the rim.
Daron Williams led GC with a game high 20 points while Bryant Camp had 16 and Blackstock 14. He was a perfect 8 for 8 from the line; his teammates combined to miss the Pride's remaining seven free throws.
Purnell had a 19, Rhone 16 and Onunaku 12 for Shenandoah.
