NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Christopher Newport held Shenandoah University to a season low 35.3 percent shooting Wednesday night to take a 70-66 USA South Conference decision in the league opener for both teams.

CNU (10-3, 1-0) also dominated on the glass with a 50-40 advantage, including 37-13 on the Hornets (8-3, 0-1) offensive end.

Still, SU trailed by just one, 59-58, with 4:17 remaining. However, the Captains answered with an Edward Riley jumper in the paint and a Donta Selden three-pointer off the ensuing Hornets miss to basically seal the contest. Shenandoah would get no closer than four points the rest of the way.

Freshman Mark Blasingame led the victors with 15 points, 13 rebounds and five blocked shots while Jeremy Romeo matched Blasingame's 15 and Davon Barton 12 with six assists.

Junior Antwon Townsend, who entered the game as the nation's most accurate three-point shooter, had a game-high 19 for SU. He was 3 for 6 from behind the arc.

Stevie Johns had 12 and Onyie Onunaku 10 rebounds to round out Shenandoah's double-digit performers.
