Men Come Up Just Shy Again

WINCHESTER, Va. - Greensboro College proved that a five-point halftime advantage was too much to overcome as Shenandoah fell to the visiting Pride 70-68 in USA South Conference men's basketball action Saturday afternoon.

GC (7-9, 3-2 USA South) received a school record seven three-pointers from senior transfer Steve Berg to down the Hornets (8-8, 0-5). Shenandoah has now lost six straight contests dating back to the Christopher Newport contest on January 11.

Berg was the story Saturday afternoon as he scored a game-high 26 points on nine field goals and a 1 of 3 showing from the line. Five of his seven three-pointers came in the second half; he hit three in a row from the 6:22 to 4:24 marks that allowed his club to stretch its lead from three to five points.

SU answered each one of Berg's three-balls during that run with a two-point bucket of its own, but could only watch as he hit his shot from increasingly far distances from the basket.

The Hornets never seriously challenged following this run - the final margin of victory was determined when SU freshman Mike Nickens-Turner nailed a three-pointer with three seconds remaining. Until this point, Shenandoah was within one possession for only 17 seconds but Berg ended that threat with his final three-pointer of the afternoon.

The game featured six ties and six lead changes - Greensboro had a double-digit lead midway through the second while the Hornets led by four with 9:18 to play.

SU junior Jeremiah Lawrence had his eighth double-double of the season, and fourth in the last five games ,with 17 points and a game-high 18 rebounds. Moutkar Fawehinmi added 15 and Nickens-Turner 10 for coach Rob Harris' club.

James Newman and Michael McDuffie backed up Berg's outstanding afternoon with 13 and 10, respectively.
