WINCHESTER, Va. - Shenandoah University avoided the longest losing streak of the Rob Harris era with a 75-72 USA South Conference men's basketball victory over visiting Methodist College Sunday afternoon.
Shenandoah (9-8, 1-5 USA South) had lost six straight games coming into the contest, matching a streak that the Hornets endured during Harris' inaugural season of 2000-2001.
Sunday's victory was far from easy, however, as SU nearly gave away its lead in the waning moments of the contest.
Up 73-70 with 21 seconds to play, the Hornets'Â
James Brodie fouled Seth Thomas on Thomas' three-point attempt at the eight second mark. Thomas hit two of his three free throws (he missed the second), setting up an SU inbounds.
MC (4-14, 2-4) induced a Shenandoah turnover on a pass that went out of bounds. Fortunately forÂ
Stevie Johns, the man who turned it over on the pass, he redeemed himself by stealing Robert Lee's inbounds pass with six seconds left.
John's was fouled on the play, and was sent to the line to ice the contest. The Hornets got another break as John's missed both free throws, but Dragan Radmanovic turned the ball over after grabbing the rebound of the second John's miss.
JuniorÂ
Antwon Townsend received the ensuing inbounds pass and sunk both free throws to seal it for the hosts.
Methodist shot 58.7 percent (27 for 46) for the game while kept itself in it by winning the rebounding battle 32-29.
SophomoreÂ
Jeremiah Lawrence led all scorers with 18 points while Townsend had 13 andÂ
Moutkar Fawehinmi 12 for the victors.
Lee led the Monarchs with 16.
