WINCHESTER, Va. - Homestanding Shenandoah University evened its men's basketball record at 3-3 Saturday afternoon with a 78-72 non-conference win over previously undefeated Mary Washington.
Shenandoah led for all but one possession of the game against the Eagles (6-1). The victory is the third straight for the Hornets in the long-time series and gives them an 18-5 advantage in the rivalry.
UMW came into the game averaging just over eight three-pointers per game, and while they hit 9 of 24 attempts from behind the arc, SU was able to answer with six of its own.
SeniorÂ
Moutkar Fawehinmi, who entered the game with five career three-pointers, was 4 for 6 from long range to key his game-high 25-point afternoon. Fawehinmi had three of his 'treys' following the break as Shenandoah sought to protect a seven-point halftime advantage.
The second half bulge reached 12 points after Fawehinmi converted a jumper in the lane with 10:34 remaining, but the Eagles fought back with 15-2 run that gave them a 58-57 lead with 6:50 to play.
Unfortunately for the visiting faithful,Â
Jeremiah Lawrence tied it by converting 1 of 2 free throws on the next trip down the floor and the Hornets never trailed again.
SeniorÂ
Onyie Onunaku, who played for most of the second half with four fouls, gave his team the lead for good by canning a pair of free throws 74 seconds after Lawrence' trip to the line. Shenandoah was able to extend this advantage to as many as 12 points and UMW was only able to make it a six-point deficit by converting a layup as time expired.
In addition to Fawehinmi's 25, Onunaku and Lawrence each had 18. Lawrence made it a double-double with a game-high 11 rebounds. SU won the battle of the glass 36-30, including 23-12 on Mary Washington's offensive end.
The Eagles had four players in double figures - Mike Lee led this group with 16.
