WINCHESTER, Va. - Christopher Newport University shot a sizzling 59.6 percent from the field Wednesday night to down host Shenandoah 83-75 in USA South Conference men's basketball action.

Co-league leading CNU (15-5, 6-1 USA South) made 19 of its 29 shots (65.5 percent) in the first 20 minutes of play to take a 10-point halftime advantage over the Hornets (9-9, 1-6 USA South).

SU cut it to five, 70-65, with 6:28 to play, but would get no closer. The Captains preceded to score seven of the game's next nine points and never let the margin fall below six points the rest of the way.

Coach Rob Harris' club did get it to six on a 5-0 run from the 49 to 34 second marks when Mike Nickens-Turner hit a layup and Jeremiah Lawrence had a three-point play, but Donta Selden answered with two free throws to ice it for CNU.

Freshman Davon Barton led all scorers with 22 points while Korey Lewis added 21 and Selden 13 for the visitors. Barton also had a game-high seven assists.

Shenandoah placed a season-high five players in double figures - Antwon Townsend had 16, Stevie Johns 14, Lawrence 13 and Mouktar Fawehinmi and Quan Griffin 11 each.
