ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. – Shenandoah got another outstanding performance from junior
Jeremiah Lawrence, but it was not enough as host NC Wesleyan took an 87-79 USA South Conference victory Saturday afternoon.
Lawrence led all scorers with a career-high tying 30 points and 22 rebounds, but the Hornets (6-7, 0-2) turned the ball over 27 times and made just one of 14 three-point attempts.
Wesleyan (6-7, 1-0) scored 34 points off those turnovers, which off-set a 52-32 Shenandoah rebounding advantage and the Bishops 28 for 69 (38.5 percent) performance from the field.
Although the hosts were cold from the field and shot 26 for 33 (78.8 percent) from the line, they made 22 of 24 second half charity stripe attempts. The two misses came at the start of the half, as the hosts canned 22 consecutive attempts, including 10 from Sharard Carmichael.
After trailing by as many as 11 points late in the second, SU rallied to trail by just two, 79-77, following a
Moutkar Fawehinmi three-pointer with 1:42 left. Unfortunately for the Hornets, this would be as close as they would get.
Wesleyan answered the three-ball with a pair of Carmichael foul shots, and then scored the final six points of the contest to seal the victory.
The Bishops had five players in double figures, led by junior Lenny Hall's 18 points and 16 from freshman Trey Drake. Fawehinmi had 21 with 13 rebounds and freshman Kendrick Carr 12 points to round out Shenandoah's double-digit scorers.

Shenandoah plays its final non-conference game (and the last of three Division I opponents) of the 2006-07 season when it travels to the University of Maryland-Eastern Shore for a 7:00 game on Wednesday.
