WINCHESTER, Va. - The Shenandoah University men's basketball team snapped its three game losing streak with an 86-82 USA South Conference win over visiting Averett Saturday afternoon.
Shenandoah (7-8, 1-2 USA South) scored the six points of the game and led throughout against the Cougars (11-5, 2-2).
After SU expanded its lead into double digits for the first time on aÂ
Moutkar Fawehinmi three-pointer with 13:06 to play in the first, they kept the lead at least five points until a 6-2 AU run made it 63-60 Shenandoah with 9:09 remaining in the contest.
Fawehinmi answered that run with a layup on the Hornets next trip down the floor, and the hosts scored 11 of the game's next 15 points to earn some much needed breathing room.
Averett was then forced to foul in an attempt to get back in it, and the strategy nearly worked. Shenandoah missed nine of its final 17 attempts from the charity stripe over the last 2:16 - AU managed to cut the gap from 12 to three points during this span.
Leading 85-82 with two seconds remaining, the Hornets finally clinched whenÂ
RaSon Alexander made the second of his two-shot attempt.
Fawehinmi had a career-high 32 points to lead all scorers withÂ
Jeremiah Lawrence adding 20 with 14 rebounds.
Damien Brown had 15 and Andrew Boor 14 for the Cougars.
