WINCHESTER, Va. - Ferrum College made a four-point halftime lead stand up Tuesday night in a 75-71 USA South Conference men's basketball victory over host Shenandoah University.
The Panthers (8-10, 2-3 USA South) took a 37-33 lead into the halftime lockerroom afterÂ
Moutkar Fawehinmi missed a jumper in the lane with seven seconds remaining and FC was able to convert a layup at the other end of the floor as time expired.
The Hornets (7-9, 1-3) were able to make up this deficit just under seven minutes into the second half, but once again poor foul shooting doomed their chances for success.
Shenandoah missed 12 of 19 free throws on the evening, including six of seven following the break. SU also missed two front ends of one-and-one opportunities.
The hosts also turned the ball over 18 times and Ferrum was able to score 20 points off of those miscues.
Still, coachÂ
Robert Harris'Â club led by as many as four points on two different occasions in the second half and held a lead as late as 6:58 mark. The Panthers finally took the lead for good on a Robbie Price three-pointer with 4:45 to play; this snapped a string in which the two teams traded the lead six times and were tied on two others.
In the waning moments, the Hornets best chance to get back in it came with 28 seconds remaining. Trailing 72-67,Â
Lenzie Adams had a three-pointer rim out and FC was able to grab the rebound.
JuniorÂ
Jeremiah Lawrence led all scorers with 24 points and 10 rebounds while Fawehinmi had 16 points. Cedric Jones had 20 points for the visitors.
