NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - League leader Christopher Newport University placed five players in double figures Wednesday night to key an 85-75 USA South Conference men's hoops victory over Shenandoah.
The Captains (13-7, 5-2 USA South) got 23 points from sophomore Davon Barton and 22 from senior Donta Selden to earn their fifth straight victory over the visiting Hornets (7-12, 1-6).
CNU shot 54.1 percent (33 for 61) from the field Wednesday, including a stellar 17 for 30 (56.7 percent) in the second half. Shenandoah countered with 22 points from seniorÂ
Moutkar Fawehinmi and additional 17 from juniorÂ
Jeremiah Lawrence, but it was not enough to counter the Captains hot shooting.
Lawrence, who was held under 10 rebounds for the first time in eight games, is now just 20 points from 1000 for his career. He will have a chance to become the 14th member of the of the SU men's basketball 1000 point club on Saturday at home against N.C. Wesleyan.
Shenandoah trailed by as many as 17 points in the second half before going on a 23-16 run to cut it to 76-68 with 1:56 remaining. However, coachÂ
Robert Harris'Â club could not sustain this run, and Christopher Newport scored six of the game's next eight points to end any chances of a comeback.
In addition to the combined 45 points from Selden and Barton, Korey Lewis had 14, Theo Baker 11 and Mark Blasingame 10 with nine rebounds and six blocks. The Captains had 13 blocks on the evening.
SU once again won the battle of the glass, 38-33, with freshmanÂ
Kendrick Carr pulling down a career-high nine. The Hornets finished the game 30 for 69 (43.5 percent) from the field.
