SALEM, Va. – The Shenandoah University men's basketball team opened up the 2007-08 season with a 87-68 victory over Frostburg State Friday night in the opening game of the Jimmy V Classic hosted by Roanoke College.
The win is the fourth straight season opening victory for the Hornets (1-0). Shenandoah now advances to the 4:00 championship Saturday afternoon against the host Maroons. Roanoke defeated York (Pa.) 73-50 in Friday's second first-round contest.
Tied at 30-30 with exactly five minutes remaining, SU reeled off the final 14 points of the half to put the Bobcats (0-1) away.
Senior
Jeremiah Lawrence did most of this damage, with a half-high 13 points, while classmate
Onyie Onunaku and junior
Stevie Johns added six each.
Junior point guard
Lenzie Adams also played well with nine points, eight of which came on the half-ending run.
Coach Rob Harris' club kept up the pressure after the break and eventually expanded the lead to as many as 23 points with just less than 13 minutes left.
This cushion remained in double digits the rest of the way, and SU was able to coast home to its 35th all-time win over Frostburg.
Lawrence finished with 21 points and nine rebounds after sitting out the final four minutes. Adams added 19 while Johns had 13 and Onunaku 11.
