HARRISONBURG, Va. – Shenandoah University earned its second men's basketball victory in three outings Tuesday night with an 85-64 non-league win at Eastern Mennonite.
SU (2-1) led 39-34 at the break before pulling away in the final 20 minutes. EMU (0-1) which had erased a 10-point first half deficit to take a three-point lead with six minutes left in the opening stanza, saw its guests turn up the pressure after halftime.
Shenandoah grabbed 24 of the35 second half rebounds, including 18 of 20 on the Royals offensive end. The Hornets also saw EMU turn the ball over 11 times.
Leading 41-38 at the 18:15 mark of the second, SU pulled away with a 13-6 run in the next 4:13 that pushed the advantage into double digits for just the second time.
The bulge remained there, as coach
Robert Harris' club extended the run by scoring 19 of the game's next 26 points to effectively ice the outcome.
Senior
Jeremiah Lawrence, who had 13 points and seven rebounds in the first, continued his strong play by finishing with 26 points and 10 rebounds while classmate
Onyie Onunaku added 11 of his 13 points and all eight of his rebounds in the second.
Stevie Johns rounded out the double digit scorers with 14 points. Winchester native Brad Parkes had 12 points for EMU.
The Hornets shot 31 of 55 (56.4 percent) for the game and owned a 44-23 advantage on the glass.
