Wesleyan Takes Overtime Decision

WINCHESTER, Va. - Visiting NC Wesleyan scored the first six points of overtime Saturday afternoon to propel itself to an 83-78 USA South Conference victory over Shenandoah.

After Lenny Hall tied it for the Bishops (9-10, 4-3 USA South) at 66-66 with a 10-foot jumper with 15 seconds remaining, SU (7-12, 1-7) held for the last shot.

Following a time-out, the Hornets inbounded to senior Moutkar Fawehinmi, who dribbled out to the three-point line and attempted to drive the lane. Fawehinmi was cut off, and his three-point attempt as time expired went off the side of the rim.

Wesleyan won the overtime tap, and Adam Coleman's jumper in the lane gave them a lead they would not relinquish.

The victory capped a mad comeback by the visitors. Down 17 points with 2:28 to play in the first half, NCWC trailed by 13 at the half and by 12 with 10:19 remaining.

The bucket that put SU up by 12, a three-pointer from sophomore Curtis Grover, spurred the Bishops into a 16-4 run over the next 4:53. Jarvis Cobb ended this spurt with a fast break lay-up at the 6:53 mark.

From this point on, the two teams were tied on three occasions and traded the lead four other times.

After Wesleyan took command of the extra session with the 6-0 run, Shenandoah was able to cut it no closer than four points the rest of the way. The Hornets had the ball on the second of their two times in cutting the deficit to four, but missed a Kevin Cornell three-pointer with six ticks left.

The Bishops grabbed the rebound and Cobb hit one of two free throws to provide the final margin.

Sophomore Lenzie Adams had a career-high 28 to lead the scoring column with Fawehinmi adding 25. The USA South Conference' leading scorer, Lenny Hall, 24 and Cobb 17 for the visitors.
