Men's Basketball Falls in Opener

Messiah Rallies for 68-61 Win

WINCHESTER, Va. - The Shenandoah University men's basketball team opened up its 2022-23 season Tuesday evening with a 68-61 non-league home loss to Messiah University.

Shenandoah (0-1), playing its first game under new head coach Nick Doyle, took a 26-17 lead into halftime versus the Falcons (1-0) but saw its visitors shoot lights out over the final 20 minutes of play to rally for the victory.

IN BRIEF
Messiah shot 31 percent (8 for 26) in the initial 20 minutes of play, but scorched the nets with 66 percent (19 of 29) shooting in the second.

Trailing by nine, the Falcons scored 24 of the first 26 points of the second half to turn that nine-point deficit into a 13-point (41-28) lead with 13:19 to play. Davion Roberts, who finished with 21 points, stopped the run with a jumper in the paint at 13:07. Up to this point, SU had missed nine of its first 10 shots from the field to start the second half.

Shenandoah did not fold its tents, however, and used Roberts' bucket to kickstart a 10-0 run of its own to make it 41-38 by the 11:04 mark. Unfortunately for the home faithful, this would be as close as the Hornets would come until again making a three-point game with 29 seconds left.

In that final minute, a Malik Jordan fastbreak jumper brought the score to 64-61 in favor of the visitors, but Messiah made three of its next four from the line to clinch the victory.

Jordan, a junior transfer, paced Doyle's club with 26 points with Roberts adding 21. Jordan and Kendrick Robinson each had a team-high seven rebounds.

Shenandoah shot 39 percent (22 of 57) from the field to 49 percent (27 of 55) for Messiah with the Hornets holding a slight, 36-35, edge on the boards.

Messiah converted 15 SU turnovers into 16 points and also scored 14 of the game's 23 second chance points.

UP NEXT
Shenandoah continues this season-opening homestand with a 7 p.m. non-league game Thursday evening versus Newport News Apprentice.
