LYNCHBURG, Va – The Shenandoah University women's team opened the fall 2023 season participating in the Wildcat Invitational hosted by Randolph College over the weekend.
Erin Talko won both of her singles matches over the weekend, first defeating Kristen Cole 7-6, 5-7, and won in a 10-6 tiebreaker and also defeating Emily Wylie 6-3, 6-3.
Olivia Guzzo also went undefeated in singles action over the weekend. The first year won in straight sets over Lynchburg 6-2,6-0 and also took care of her playing partner from Bridgewater 0-6, 6-3, 1-0.
Ariella Stepleman was the other Hornet to win both singles matches. Stepleman defeated Pfeiffer's Alison Sloop 6-4, 6-1 and also picked up the win over Randolph's Harper Whetzel 6-3, 6-1 in straight sets.
Every other Hornet went 1-1 over the course of singles play in the invitational.
Emily Hatseras was a 6-0, 6-4 winner over Maddie Mills. The first year would drop her final match 2-6, 1-6 to Pfeiffer's Haley Ingenito.
Leigha Montrief dropped her first match 3-6, 1-6, but then came back to take the win against Randolph's Amanda Jagdeo 7-5, 6-3.
Madison Shawver would defeat her opponent from Pfeiffer before dropping the match to Randolph's Mollie McNeil 5-7, 5-7.
Tanea Spruill lost her opening match to Lena Kersten of Randolph 2-6
, 3-6 before going on to blank Lynchburg's Ashley Hair 6-0 6-0.
Allison Cherwien won both of her singles matches over the weekend, first defeating Noura Elkhansa from Randolph College 6-1, 2-6, 10-4 tiebreaker. The junior would then go on to drop her next singles match over Bridgewater's Grace Knighton 7-6, 3-6.
The doubles teams of the Hornets were perfect on the weekend as the pairings of Cherwein/Stepleman, Montrief/Shawver, Guzzo/Spruill, and Hatseras/Talko all went 2-0 over the course of the weekend.
The Hornets will be back in action this weekend as they travel to Mary Washington for the ITA Small College Regional Championships on September 23-25.
