Men's Basketball Edged by Guilford in Tight Contest, 67–63

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Shenandoah University men's basketball team fell in a tightly contested ODAC matchup, 67–63, on Saturday afternoon against (RV) Guilford College.

The Hornets (6–13, 1–9 ODAC) and the Quakers (14–4, 7–2 ODAC) battled through 20 lead changes and nine ties throughout the game. A late jumper and free throws put the Quakers ahead by four with under 30 seconds remaining, and despite a three-pointer from Landon Russ to cut the deficit to one, the Quakers sealed the win with three free throws in the final moments.

RECAP

The opening minutes saw frequent lead changes, with Dorian Davis and Joshua Stephen each connecting on three-pointers to give SU an early 6–4 advantage. Gavin Bizyak followed with another three-pointer, putting the Hornets up by three after a Guilford layup.

Midway through the first half, Joseph Baldwin, appearing in just his second game in the last month, scored his fifth point of the contest to give Shenandoah its largest lead of the game at 16–10. Guilford responded with a 9–0 run over the next four minutes to reclaim the lead before Stephen tied the game at 19 with another three-pointer.

Late in the first half, the Quakers scored on five consecutive possessions to take a six-point lead with two minutes remaining. However, Shenandoah closed the gap to just two at halftime, thanks to late baskets by Davis and Baldwin.

Baldwin opened the second half with a three-pointer, briefly giving the Hornets a narrow lead. The teams continued to trade advantages, with Shenandoah's largest lead in the half reaching two points, while Guilford led by as many as five after a dunk with 4:13 remaining.

The Hornets quickly erased the five-point deficit with back-to-back baskets from Stephen and Russ. Russ' three-pointer with 3:11 left tied the game at 58. Both defenses held firm until Guilford scored a layup with just over 90 seconds to play.

Stephen tied the game again at 60 with a layup, but Guilford responded with four straight points to take a 64–60 lead with 25 seconds remaining. Russ hit a clutch three-pointer from the left elbow to cut the deficit to one, but the Quakers made two free throws to extend the lead to three. Shenandoah missed a potential game-tying shot in the closing seconds.

The Hornets made 11 three-pointers, marking the fourth time this season they have made at least 10 in a game.

Davis led Shenandoah with 24 points and eight rebounds, while Stephen added 15 points in 35 minutes of action.
