Wright Leads Hornets to Third Straight Win

WINCHESTER, Va.- The Shenandoah University men's basketball team won its third straight game on Monday night with a 74-65 non-conference win at home versus St. Mary's College (Md.).

Ellis Wright led the Hornets (3-0) to victory over the Seahawks (2-2) with 26 points on 83 percent shooting from the field, with 15 of his points coming in the second half.

RECAP

Buckets by Matthew Simmons and Wright put the Hornets up by five early in the game, just before a three by Dorian Davis gave Shenandoah a nine-point lead. Minutes later, Shenandoah gained a double-digit lead thanks to three free throws by Landon Russ after drawing a shooting foul.

Down 25-10, the Seahawks went on a 10-3 run that pulled their deficit down to single-digits with seven minutes left in the first. Wright got the lead back to 10 with a layup, but by halftime, the visitors only trailed by six.

The Seahawks held the Hornets to one basket in the first five minutes of the second half to get within one. The visitors kept the game at one possession, but five points from Andrew Ford and a dunk by Seth Sanusi gave the Hornets a five-point cushion with just under 10 minutes left in the contest.

The lead stayed the same for the Hornets for the next few possessions until Joseph Baldwin collected his own rebound and dished the rock out to Landon Russ at the top of the key, with Russ knocking down a deep shot. Sanusi then scored another second-chance basket for SU, putting the home team back up by 10.

The Seahawks once again were able to cut their lead down to single digits, but a three by Wright in the corner of the court gave them the insurance points needed to hang on for the win.

St. Mary's had 18 turnovers with Davis, Baldwin, and Russ all collecting three steals. Baldwin and Samuel Dailey also had a block on the defensive end of the court.

Offensively, Shenandoah had 13 assists with Davis and Simmons leading the way with three each. All 10 Hornets that saw playing time tonight scored.
