GRANTHAM, Pa. - The Shenandoah University men's basketball team went on the road for the first time this season and defeated Messiah University, 74-61, behind a career-high 35 points from sophomore
Ellis Wright on Wednesday.
Wright became the first Hornet to score at least 35 points in a game and score at least 26 points in consecutive games since Jaylen Williams in 2021.
The Hornets (4-0) also got help from Joseph Baldwin, who produced the first double-double of the season for the team with a 16-point, 11-rebound night against the Falcons (1-4).
RECAP
Shenandoah gained the lead following an early deficit and extended it thanks to three pointers from Wright and Andrew Ford. However, after Ford's three, the Falcons held the Hornets scoreless for four minutes, while they grabbed a 16-13 lead.
The Hornets rallied quickly to get the lead back in their favor with help from another three from Ford. The lead didn't stay for long, as the Falcons answered with a three of their own, helping them tie the game at 21.Â
With the game now tied at 23, Wright buried a shot from downtown, which gave the Hornets the lead, which they'd hold on to for the rest of the game. By halftime, Shenandoah led 32-27. Nearly a third of the team's points came from the free throw line in the first half, shooting 10-12 from the line.
Matthew Simmons began the second half for SU with two straight layups as Wright made consecutive threes to get the lead up to nine for the visitors. Another pair of threes from the forward allowed the Hornets to get a 13-point lead. Wright finished the evening with seven threes on 12 attempts from beyond the arc.
With under three minutes left in the game, Shenandoah put the game out of reach for the Falcons, gaining a 19-point advantage behind layups from Dorian Davis and free throws from John Allen. Davis scored 10 points throughout the night, giving Shenandoah three players in double-digits.
