Men's Basketball Falls to Lynchburg on Last-Second Shot, 78–76

LYNCHBURG, Va.– The Shenandoah University men's basketball team suffered a heartbreaking 78–76 loss to the University of Lynchburg on Saturday afternoon, falling on a last-second shot in ODAC action.

Shenandoah (7–15, 2–11 ODAC) trailed by 20 points with just over 12 minutes remaining but mounted a furious comeback to tie the game at 76–76 on a three-point play from Davion Roberts. Lynchburg (12–10, 6–7 ODAC) responded with the game-winning jumper with four seconds left and blocked Shenandoah's final shot at the buzzer to secure the victory.

RECAP

Joseph Baldwin and Dorian Davis gave Shenandoah an early 5–2 lead, but Lynchburg steadily gained momentum and built a double-digit advantage midway through the first half. Despite efforts from Shenandoah to stay within striking distance, a late dunk by Lynchburg extended its lead to 11 at halftime.

Shenandoah made three quick three-pointers early in the second half but still found itself trailing by 10. Lynchburg then went on a 10–0 run to stretch its lead to 62–42 with 12:05 remaining.

Baldwin sparked Shenandoah's comeback with a three-pointer, followed by a fast-break layup from John Allen after a steal by Davis, cutting the deficit to 15. Layups from Davis and Landon Russ helped Shenandoah continue to chip away at the lead.

With just over four minutes left, Shenandoah still trailed by 15. The visitors then caught fire from beyond the arc, with Davis and Joshua Stephen hitting back-to-back threes to trim the deficit to nine. Russ followed with a driving layup, capping an 8–0 run in just 48 seconds.

Lynchburg briefly pushed its lead back to 10, but Shenandoah responded with six free throws from Roberts and a jumper by Baldwin to make it a two-point game with under a minute to play.

After a Lynchburg player missed a free throw with 28 seconds left, Roberts drove the length of the court and converted a game-tying and-one, knotting the game at 76–76.

Lynchburg answered with a mid-range jumper to take the lead with four seconds remaining. Shenandoah had one last chance to tie the game, but Lynchburg blocked the final shot at the buzzer to escape with the victory.

Baldwin, Davis, and Stephen led Shenandoah in scoring, while Roberts added 11 points off the bench. Shenandoah made 11 three-pointers while holding Lynchburg to just 3-for-22 from beyond the arc.
