WINCHESTER, Va. - The Shenandoah University Department of Intercollegiate Athletics is inducting six individuals and one team into its Hall of Fame Class of 2026, with today's spotlight focusing on Football pioneer Gregg Anderson.
When Shenandoah University reinstated its football program in 2000, it needed leaders who could establish a relentless defensive standard. Defensive powerhouse Gregg Anderson stepped into that role and etched his name into the program's record books.
Anderson played three impactful seasons with the Hornets, proving to be a dominant presence at linebacker and a nightmare for opposing offenses in the USA South Athletic Conference (then the Dixie Athletic Conference).
Following his standout senior campaign, Anderson became the first player in Shenandoah football history to earn American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) All-America honors.
He set the Hornets' original single-season tackle mark with 85 tackles in 2002, setting a benchmark for speed, reaction, and physical play.
Anderson also earned consecutive All-Dixie Conference accolades in 2001 and 2002.
Beyond the individual awards, Anderson's play on the field and leadership off it proved foundational. He helped establish the culture and defensive identity that propelled Shenandoah Football to back-to-back USA South conference championship titles in 2003 and 2004.
Anderson's career would be capped off with participation in the 2002 Aztec Bowl - an all-star contest between AFCA DIII Senior Standouts and All-Star American Football players from Mexico. The game was played on Saturday, December 14, 2002 in Torreon, Mexico, with the USA winning 15-9.
Gregg Anderson and the rest of the inductees will be enshrined in the hall of fame on October 17, 2026 at 6:30 p.m. in the James R. Wilkins, Jr. Athletics & Events Center.
