Men's Basketball's Winning Streak Snapped by Marlins

Hornets Fall 90-55 at VWU

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - The Shenandoah University men's basketball team had its four-game winning streak snapped on Wednesday evening in a 90-55 ODAC loss at Virginia Wesleyan University.

A string of three-pointers at the start of the game helped the Marlins (14-5, 9-1 ODAC) pull away and kept their lead above double digits for the remainder of the contest. John Allen led the Hornets (11-9, 4-7) in scoring with 14 points.

RECAP

VWU scored first on a transition three-pointer, with John Allen quickly answering for the Hornets with a layup. The Marlins then went on a 19-1 run over the next six minutes to take a 22-3 lead. Isaiah Lee and Allen scored the next seven points for the Hornets, with Samuel Dailey chipping in his first points of the evening, but the Marlins still led by 18.

Trailing by 21, Allen led the Hornets on a 9-0 run that cut the Hornets' deficit down to 12 with just under three minutes left in the first half. Ellis Wright nailed a three-pointer towards the end of the half to keep the deficit at 14, but the Marlins responded with a pair of free throws to take a 40-24 lead into the break.

Dorian Davis, Conner Long, Allen, and Wright scored early in the second half to keep the Marlins' lead below 20, but a 14-2 run by the Marlins gave them a 30-point advantage with less than 10 minutes remaining.

Three-pointers by Landon Russ and Lee, along with a layup by Seth Sanusi were the final field goals of the evening for the Hornets, as the Marlins maintained their 30-point lead for the final 10 minutes.

Shenandoah took 20 attempts at the free-throw line in the second half and converted 13 of them, while the Marlins shot well over 50 percent from the floor during that stretch at the other end of the court.

Eleven Hornets scored in the game, including six players from the bench, with Lee leading SU bench players with 10 points.
