Men's Hoops Opens at UMBC

BALTIMORE, Md. - The Shenandoah University men's basketball team opened its 2018-19 season with a 93-45 exhibition loss to UMBC.

Brandon Horvath, brother of SU freshman Alex Hovarth, posted his first career double-double to lead the Retrievers (1-1) over the Hornets (0-0).

THE RUNDOWN

1st Half:

The game remained scoreless until the Hornets hit the net first, 2:32 into the game, when Alan Dabney nailed a three-point shot.

After a series of missed shots and turnovers, the squads would trade the lead back and forth for the remainder of the first half until the last five minutes when UMBC would start to pull away with an 8-4 run. The Retrievers led the Hornets 29-24 going into the locker room.

2nd Half:

UMBC came out of the locker room fresh, scoring 36 of the initial 42 points of the stanza to bring the score to 65-30 with just under 10 minutes remaining. Chris Chaney and Avery White were the only two Hornets to find the basket during the scoring drought.

Alex Horvarth drained a three with 9:16 remaining before putting his brother on the line a minute later for hook-and-hold flagrant foul.

SU scored 12 points in the final eight minutes of the game.

QUOTE OF THE DAY

"I was very happy with the effort level we put out on the court today," head coach Adam Walsh said. "I am pleased with the performance and how well we executed in the first half. We knew full well they would come out strong from halftime but this was a good experience for our first competition against someone else. We have a lot of youth on the team so we were pleased to see the growth and how quickly they have assimilated themselves into the program."

  • Christopher Chaney led the Hornets offense going 5-11 from the field for 12 points

  • Alan Dabney contributed eight points and led the team with seven rebounds.
